The Woman Artist: From an Invisible History to
an Invisible Presence, Which Keeps Us in an Invisible Existence
Being an artist in the United States is hard; being a woman artist is
even harder. When I tell people that I am a painter, they automatically
think that, because I am female, art is my hobby and not a serious profession.
Galleries and museums are less likely to promote women, because of the
assumption that we are not as good as our male counterparts; therefore,
we will not bring in the audience that is needed. In the twentieth century,
we have not made much progress in the fine art profession. We have gone
from an invisible history to an invisible presence, which keeps women
artist in an invisible existence.
